"with Thanksgiving approaching, we have much to be thankful
for"
Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching and this year Upsilon has
a lot to be thankful for. We have experienced a rapid
growth in our goal to become the most dominate fraternity at
Penn State. Our Alumni are starting to return in force and reliving
their Upsilon experience through us. This was most evident at
our large Homecoming cocktail party and stockholders meeting.
At the meeting the undergrads were rewarded for their service
to the Old Gal and for maintaining the highest standards of academic
excellence. Over $5,000 was distributed from our Educational
Foundation to subsidize some of undergraduates’ educational
expenses.
With home football season over, we understand fewer
alumni will be stopping by the house. Please continue to check
the website to see what the undergrads are up to. We still have
a few long term goals we look to accomplish by the end of the
year and any Alumni involvement is always a plus. We set a goal
to raise $100,000 for Thon this year, keep the house full and
recruit at least 15 more members during spring recruitment.

As my term as HSP comes to a close I look back proudly at my
personal growth and the growth of Upsilon. The challenges and
opportunities this position has offered has taught me more than
I ever could have imagined. My trips with nationals to Indianapolis
and Washington D.C. opened my eyes to this amazing and necessary
Greek movement. Working with our alumni board, I was able to
see what it truly means to be a life-long brother. Their support
and hard work over the last few years is the only reason we are
experiencing our current success. I’ve also been privileged
enough to see the younger Alpha Sigs grow into the men that our
founders envisioned. I look forward to supporting them as they
take over the reins of the Old Gal and experience the same opportunities
I did.
My next move in my life-long service to Alpha Sigma Phi
will be switching my focus from the managerial aspect to brotherhood
development. I look forward to attending the Ralph F. Burns Leadership
Institute with our soon to be newly initiated brothers and making
sure every member embodies our values of Silence, Charity, Purity,
Honor and Patriotism. We look forward to seeing everyone back
at the Old Gal this spring for Blue/White weekend.

"all our recruitment efforts payoff big-time with a record
21 new members in our Gamma Pledge Class "
On Monday, October 1, bids were dropped off around campus to
the men the brotherhood had chosen to welcome as the Gamma Pledge
Class of 2007. The following Thursday, twenty-one men
officially accepted their bids, marking the largest pledge class
since Alpha Sig returned to Penn State.
The Old Gal's newest members are a diverse group representing
the freshman, sophomore and junior classes, as well as several
different states. Their varied majors, interests and strengths
will only improve the chapter. It seems the promise
of becoming the top fraternity at PSU once again, is well on
its way.

Recruitment efforts began during the summer session. Recruitment
director Ryan Mattern, '09, and the rest of the brothers who
were in State College over the summer took every opportunity
to draw people to Alpha Sig.
Much thanks is also owed to the Alumni Corporation for taking
an interest in the process and contributing funds to the effort.

"I am directly involved with seeing them grow to be the
better man"
As we continue the fall semester, another pledge class is in
the process of becoming the next Alpha Sigs. A fun and successful
summer and fall rush has lead to one of the largest pledge classes
on campus this year and one of the biggest we've
ever had at Upsilon. Twenty-one
pledges (two juniors, six sophomores, and thirteen freshmen)
are in the nine-week pledge process as “Gamma Class.”
Not only
is it great to see such a healthy sized class, but as Pledge
Master I am directly involved with seeing them grow to be the
better man. Now that we are halfway through the process, we are
already seeing progress in the condition of the house, the enthusiasm
of the brothers, and the continuing growth of the brotherhood.
Among the other Alpha Sigma Phi pledging rituals, our pledge
class recently adopted ‘big
brothers’, which was a great celebratory night. For the
next few weeks, the process will continue as they learn what
it means to be an Alpha Sig. We are enjoying having a new and
great group of pledges around and we are looking forward to their
much deserved initiation this winter.

"this year we plan on taking a big step forward in our
fundraising and involvement"
As a fraternity at Penn State we take great pride in our involvement
in Dance Marathon. We have been improving in the past few years
and this year we plan on taking a big step forward in our fundraising
and involvement.
Our first canning
trip was a huge success, but we are always looking to improve
in different ways. We are always looking for new ways to get
involved in THON by getting a family or having corporate sponsors.
This year, we are proud to be teamed with the Tapestry Dance
Company in our quest to raise as much money as possible for a
worthy cause. Now that our first canning trip is over, we are
looking forward to the next three! Most importantly; on February
22nd we plan on seeing all of our hard work pay off. FTK!

"It's going to be hard to top this year’s homecoming...
It opened our eyes to the support we have from our Alumni"
I just want to say I had a great time being Homecoming Chair
along with Thomas Bull. Everyone did a great job on everything
this year, from Air Bands to the Homecoming Parade. This year’s
Homecoming would not have been a success if it were not for the
help of our entire brotherhood. They were out there every night
designing, constructing, and performing for the old gal. I would
like to personally thank all of you for your great efforts and
support throughout the week. We really showed how we can “reflect
the spirit”.
Another event during homecoming that was a
big hit was our Alumni Cocktail party, which was after our victorious
win over the Wisconsin Badgers. It opened my eyes to the support
we have from our alumni. I believe old and new brothers enjoyed
this homecoming more because of the turnout we had for our cocktail
party. It's going to be hard to top this year’s homecoming
but I know we will because we are Alpha Sigma Phi.

"Our 2007 homecoming celebration was a great success,
highlighted by the newest additions to Upsilon, our 21-member
pledge class. Over 150 brothers from all decades and their
guests were able to attend. Prior to the social part of the
evening, the Upsilon Corporation held its annual meeting. The
agenda covered our strategic plan and we delivered on our leadership
and scholarship incentives made possible through the Educational
Foundation. We concluded the meeting with the Mystic Circle
and sang "For he's an Alpha Sig". Looking forward,
we are focused on continued growth, whether it is leadership
development, recruitment or housing improvements. Your contributions
will continue the perpetuation the Upsilon chapter of Alpha
Sigma Phi."

Alpha Sig holds first Annual Mash Bash Philanthropy!
Alpha Sig + Chi Omega + Mashed Potatoes = a little help for
the Make-a-Wish Foundation
On the heels of September's Wiffleball tournament, Alpha Sigma
Phi launched another philanthropy event. This time, participants
traded in bats and balls for mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy.
Teams contributed $40 each to compete in the November 13th Mash
Bash, which marked the first time working together with the Chi
Omega sorority. Teams made up of Greeks, as well as other students,
packed the first floor of the house as it got underway.

The race to finish the food was a great time and an Alpha Sig
team took home the gold.
Participants also filled a giant box with nonperishable foods
for a local food bank.
The sisters of Chi Omega also enjoyed a social later that night.
The undergrads look forward to future events with them.
